Seeking the Lord is actually not a novel idea. Throughout the human history, there have been many seekers of God. It’s within the human nature to seek God. We compiled all the verses in the Bible on this topic for your personal and/or group Bible study. I. Seeking the Lord in the Old Testament
And from there you will seek Jehovah your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
B. 1 Chronicles
1 Chronicles 16:10-11
10 Glory in His holy name; Let the heart of those who seek Jehovah rejoice.
11 Seek Jehovah and His strength; seek His face continually.
1 Chronicles 22:19
Now set your heart and your soul to seek after Jehovah your God; and arise and build the sanctuary of Jehovah God, in order to bring the ark of the Covenant of Jehovah and all the holy vessels of God to the house that is to be built for the name of Jehovah.
C. 2 Chronicles
2 Chronicles 11:16
And those from all the tribes of Israel who set their hearts to seek Jehovah the God of Israel came after them to Jerusalem to sacrifice to Jehovah, the God of their fathers.
2 Chronicles 12:14
And he did what was evil, because he did not prepare his heart to seek Jehovah.
2 Chronicles 14:4
And he commanded Judah to pursue Jehovah, the God of their fathers, and perform the law and the commandment.
2 Chronicles 15:2, 12
2 And he went out to meet Asa and said to him, Hear me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin: Jehovah is with you while you are with Him; and if you pursue Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.
12 And they entered into a covenant to pursue Jehovah, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul,
2 Chronicles 20:3-4
3 And Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face to pursue Jehovah, and he proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
4 And Judah gathered themselves to seek help from Jehovah; indeed out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek Jehovah.
2 Chronicles 26:5
And he set himself to seek after God during the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the vision of God; and as long as he sought after Jehovah, God caused him to prosper.
2 Chronicles 30:18-19
18 For a great number of the people, many from Ephraim and Manasseh and Issachar and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet they ate the passover otherwise than as prescribed; for Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, May Jehovah the Good expiate for everyone
19 Who has prepared his heart to seek after God, after Jehovah, the God of his fathers, even though he is not according to the rules of purification for the sanctuary.
2 Chronicles 31:21
And in every work that he began in service to the house of God and in accordance with the law and the commandment, to seek after his God, he did it with all his heart and prospered.
And the children of Israel who returned from the captivity and all who had separated themselves from the defilement of the nations of the land to join them, to seek Jehovah the God of Israel, ate the passover
For I was ashamed to ask for troops and horsemen from the king to help us against the enemy in the way because we had spoken to the king, saying, The hand of our God is for good upon all those who seek Him, but His power and His wrath is against all those who forsake Him.
But as for me, I would seek after God, And I would commit my cause to God,
If you seek earnestly after God And make supplication unto the Almighty,
And those who know Your name put their trust in You, For You have not forsaken those who seek You, O Jehovah.
Jehovah looked down from heaven Upon the sons of men To see if there was anyone who had insight, who seeks after God.
The lowly will eat and be satisfied; Those who seek after Jehovah will praise Him―May your hearts live forever!
This is the generation of those who seek Him, Those who seek Your face, even Jacob. Selah.
When You say, Seek My face, To You my heart says, Your face, O Jehovah, will I seek.
I sought Jehovah, and He answered me; And He delivered me from all that terrified me.
The young lions hunger and starve, But those who seek Jehovah will not lack any good thing.
O God, You are my God; I seek You diligently. My soul thirsts for You, My flesh faints in longing for You, In a dry and weary land without water.
My soul pursues after You; Your right hand upholds me.
May all those who seek You Be glad and rejoice in You; And may those who love Your salvation Say continually, May God be magnified!
In the day of my distress I sought the Lord; My hand was stretched out in the night, and it did not drop. My soul refused to be comforted.
When He slew them, they inquired after Him, And they returned and diligently sought God.
Fill their faces with shame, That they may seek Your name, O Jehovah.
3 Glory in His holy name; Let the heart of those who seek Jehovah rejoice.
4 Seek Jehovah and His strength; Seek His face continually.
Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with all their heart.
With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments.
5 I wait for Jehovah; my soul waits, And in His word I hope.
6 My soul waits for the Lord More than watchmen for the morning, Yes, watchmen for the morning.
I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently will find me.
Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek Jehovah understand all things.
H. Song of Songs
Song of Songs 3:1-4
1 On my bed night after night I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but found him not.
2 I will rise now and go about in the city; In the streets and in the squares I will seek him whom my soul loves. I sought him, but found him not.
3 The watchmen who go about in the city found me—Have you seen him whom my soul loves?
4 Scarcely had I passed them When I found him whom my soul loves; I held him and would not let go Until I had brought him into my mother’s house And into the chamber of her who conceived me.
When they say to you, Inquire of the necromancers and the familiar spirits, who twitter and mutter; say to them, Should not a people inquire of their God? Should they go to the dead on behalf of the living—
8 Indeed in the path of Your judgments, O Jehovah, we have waited for You. Your name, that is, Your memorial, Is the desire of our soul.
9 My soul desires You in the night; Indeed my spirit within me seeks You at the dawn; For when Your judgments are in the earth, The inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.
I have not spoken in secret, In a dark place of the earth; I did not say to the seed of Jacob, Seek Me in vain. I, Jehovah, speak righteousness, Declaring things that are right.
Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness, Who seek after Jehovah, Look to the rock from which you were hewn, And to the excavation of the quarry from which you were dug.
Seek Jehovah while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near.
And you will seek Me and find Me if you search for Me with all your heart.
In those days and at that time, declares Jehovah, The children of Israel will come, Both they and the children of Judah together; They will go along with weeping as they go, And they will seek Jehovah their God.
Jehovah is good to those who wait on Him, To the soul that seeks Him.
So I set my face toward the Lord God to seek Him in prayer and supplications with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.
Afterward the children of Israel will return and seek Jehovah their God and David their King, and they will come with fear to Jehovah and to His goodness in the last days.
With their flocks and with their herds they will go To seek Jehovah, But they will not find Him; He has withdrawn Himself from them.
I will go away, I will return to My place, Until they acknowledge their offense And seek My face; In their affliction they will seek Me earnestly.
Sow unto righteousness for yourselves; Reap according to lovingkindness; Break up your fallow ground; For it is time to seek Jehovah Until He comes and rains Righteousness on you.
Amos 5:4, 6, 8
4 For thus says Jehovah to the house of Israel, Seek Me, and live;
6 Seek Jehovah, and live; Lest He rush upon the house of Joseph like fire, And it devour it, and there be none to extinguish the fire in Bethel.
8 He who makes the Pleiades and Orion And turns the shadow of death into the morning And darkens the day with the night; He who calls for the water of the sea And pours it upon the surface of the earth, Jehovah is His name,
Seek Jehovah, All you meek of the earth, Who have performed His judgments. Seek righteousness; Seek meekness; Perhaps you will be hidden In the day of Jehovah’s anger.
Indeed, many peoples and strong nations will come to seek Jehovah of hosts in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of Jehovah.
II. Seeking the Lord in the New Testament
Matthew 7:7, 11
7 Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.
11 If you then being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in the heavens give good things to those who ask Him!
And the angel answered and said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you are seeking Jesus, the crucified.
36 And Simon and those with him hunted for Him,
37 And they found Him and said to Him, All are seeking You.
And he said to them, Do not be alarmed. You are seeking Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has been raised; He is not here. Behold the place where they laid Him.
Luke 11:9, 13
9 And I say to you, Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.
13 If you then being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father who is from heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!
And He said to them, Struggle to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will seek to enter, yet will not be able.
And they became frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, and the men said to them, Why are you seeking the living One among the dead?
So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
Little children, I am still with you a little while; you will seek Me, and even as I said to the Jews, Where I am going, you cannot come, now I say to you also.
14 When she said these things, she turned backward and beheld Jesus standing there, yet she did not know that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking? She, supposing that He was the gardener, said to Him, Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.
So that the remainder of men may seek out the Lord, even all the Gentiles upon whom My name has been called,
That they might seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, even though He is not far from each one of us;
If therefore you were raised together with Christ, seek the things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.
But without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to Him, for he who comes forward to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
